Daily Madden: The 49ers Search For A Wide Receiver

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers need help at wide receiver after releasing Braylon Edwards earlier this week. There are reports the team might sign a veteran receiver for the playoffs, depending on how the second-stringers do against the Rams this weekend.

"It's so hard to learn what they're doing," said John Madden, who said it's hard to learn an offense in such a short period of time. "This guy could be the slot on the right side on four wide receivers and you have four or five plays for him. Now that's a possibility. Any more than that would be very, very difficult."

Is former 49er star receiver Terrell Owens a possibility?

"I've always supported and backed Terrell Owens, but there's no way I would do that with the 49ers," Madden said. "I think the way things are going for them now, I really don't think they need that."

The last game of the season this weekend is important for both the 49ers and the Raiders.

"The 49ers getting that second slot (in the NFC) is very big because you get a bye, which is an automatic win in the first round of the playoffs. Then you just go directly to the divisional playoffs, and that's going to be a home game. And if you win that, then it's a jump ball in the championship game to get to the Super Bowl."

The Raiders have to beat the Chargers Sunday to have a chance to play in the post-season.

"They could win and still not make the playoffs," Madden said. "It would be good for both local teams to win...The 49ers just taking care of business is going to be a little easier than what the Raiders are going to have to do." (8:25)
