Not Likely To See Northern Lights From Solar Storm In California

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A storm from the broiling sun turned the chilly northernmost skies of Earth into an ever-changing and awe-provoking art show of northern lights on Tuesday.

The Associated Press reported that "even experienced stargazers were stunned by the intensity of the aurora borealis that swept across the night sky in parts of Europe after the biggest solar flare in six years."

That said, those looking for a light show Tuesday night here in the Bay Area might not be in for such a treat.

The aurora borealis probably won't be visible in California, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research scientist Juan Rodriguez told the Los Angeles Times. "But in Canada, maybe in the northern United States, it's a pretty amazing sight," he said.
