Concord Plans Redevelopment Of Naval Weapons Station

CONCORD (KCBS)— The Concord City Council took a major step toward redeveloping the Concord Naval Weapons Station. After nearly six years, the vision for thousands of acres has been finalized leaving housing advocates and environmentalists alike applauding.

Even though the Concord Naval Weapons Station is closed, the Navy still currently owns the property.

A major hurdle has been cleared as the city is preparing to take over what will eventually become a community of almost 30,000 people with more than 12,000 homes.

KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:

"We want people to be able to live near where they work as much as possible and we want housing to be as affordable to people at all the different income levels," said Amie Fishman with the East Bay Housing Organization.

Jeremy Madsen of Greenbelt Alliance said, from an environmental point of view, "what's not to like?"

"It preserves open space. About 3,500 of the 5,100 acres of the Concord Naval Weapons Station will be open space," said Madsen.

An environmental study of the land is next with clean-up to follow.

The plan clusters development around the North Concord BART station.
