Robberies Put Residents South Of UC Berkeley Campus On Edge

BERKELEY (KCBS) – The south side of the UC Berkeley campus saw an uptick in the number of robberies in January compared to a year earlier, and this has some residents taking precautions.

The area has experienced eight robberies and attempted robberies in January. UC Berkeley Police said that six of those robberies occurred in a week's span, just four blocks from campus.

Student Ellie Koganall said that she received an e-mail about the crimes.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

"We got it through our sorority, and it said that we need to be careful walking alone and stuff like that," said Koganall.

Most of the robberies occurred at night, or in the early morning, but some of them were right in the middle of the day.

In response, police said that they will increase patrols in the area including monitoring the south side in civilian clothes.

During one robbery a woman was hit in the back of the head. Police said that awareness of surroundings is key to avoiding robberies.
