Wanted Parolee Fatally Shot By Antioch Police

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- Antioch police fatally shot a wanted parolee Thursday afternoon while attempting to detain him, a police captain said.

Detectives in unmarked vehicles spotted the 26-year-old man as he was driving, police Capt. Leonard Orman said.

The man, who was wanted for a parole violation, did not yield when police attempted to stop him near Hillcrest Avenue and 13th Street and two detectives fired shots at the suspect, Orman said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A 25-year-old female passenger in the suspect's vehicle was not harmed, Orman said.

Orman said the detectives believed they were in danger, although it was not immediately clear why.

The detectives and witnesses, including the female passenger, were still being questioned this evening, Orman said.

The suspect was on parole for possession of stolen property.
