Expected Muni Budget To Eliminate Free Sunday Meter Parking

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is poised to approve a new two-year budget Tuesday with good news for many of the city's young riders, but bad news for those looking for free parking on Sundays.

The SFMTA's Board President Tom Nolan warmed up to the idea of free rides for low-income youth during public hearings.

Nolan described listening to hours of testimony from low-income riders and how Muni is vital to them and the difficulty they have coming up with the money.

"I was very touched by it," Nolan said.

But that same budget that shows compassion for some would eliminate free meters on Sundays for others.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Mayor Ed Lee would like to keep them free, but has said it just isn't possible.

"They really need to generate funds not only to bridge the gap - they actually have to have some additional funds to get to the maintenance of their assets," said Lee.

In order to raise revenue, there have been a dozen mid-management layoffs and plans are in the works to add 500 more parking meters.
