Pet Lovers Fighting Closure Of Palo Alto Animal Shelter

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) - The City of Palo Alto's animal shelter has been around for some 70 years, but when the City of Mountain View recently decided to pull out of its animal services contract with the shelter, some Palo Alto city officials recommended the animal rescue facility be shuttered altogether.

That move sent Palo Alto's animal lovers into a frenzy, with some even creating a "save our shelter" Facebook page in an attempt to change elected officials' minds about the future of the shelter. More than 250 people subsequently joined the page.

Advocates suggest that stricter enforcement of local dog licensing laws could help generate the funds to keep the shelter going.

A hearing on the future of the shelter was slated for Tuesday's Palo Alto City Council meeting.
