SF's Doyle Drive Replacement To Cause 3-Day Closure

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Commuters who use Doyle Drive in and out of San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge will be forced to deal with a weekend closure April 27th to the 30th. The closure will go from 8 p.m. Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday morning.

When it re-opens Monday, commuters will use a new elevated roadway in a tunnel and the lane configuration will be different.

It's all part of a $1.1 billion reconstruction project to tear down Doyle Drive and make way for the new Presidio Parkway, according to project spokeswoman Molly Graham.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

"This will be a big change for drivers and there always is an adjustment period. For the first couple of weeks we expect people to act in a new manner. We'll be asking people to use ferries for that first week or change their hours a little bit," Graham said, admitting it won't be easy at first.

As far as the weekend of the complete closure, Golden Gate Bridge District officials are planning on increased bus and ferry service. They'll also be faced with increased traffic from the Giants playing at home during that time.

If you're wondering why Memorial Day weekend wasn't used for the closure, it's because that's the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th anniversary celebration. The detour could be in place for up to three years.
