Suspected Killer During Modesto Eviction Standoff Was Heavily Armed For Battle

MODESTO (CBS / AP) -- Police say the suspected killer of a sheriff's deputy and a locksmith during an eviction in Modesto was heavily armed and prepared to do battle with authorities.

Modesto police said on Saturday that several weapons, including an assault rifle, were found close to the suspect's body along with a gas mask and police-style radios.

The body was found in the burned ruins of an apartment building after a police standoff.

Modesto police spokesman Brian Findlen says the suspect was also wearing a bullet proof vest.

Authorities have not positively identified the body. But they say the man is the person suspected of shooting Sheriff's Deputy Robert Paris and Glendon David Engert on Thursday during an eviction attempt.
