Santa Rosa HS Basketball Coach Pleads Not Guilty To Sex With Teen

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) - A girls' basketball coach at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Sonoma County Superior Court to having sex with a 16-year-old student.

Andrew John Medeiros, 25, of Santa Rosa, is charged with two sex crimes with a person under age 18. The crimes allegedly occurred April 2.

A preliminary hearing date is scheduled for July 10.

Medeiros was arrested April 11 at Piner High School, where he was employed as a student supervisor. He posted bond on $50,000 bail and is out of custody.

Medeiros met the 16-year-old girl at Cardinal Newsman High School where he was the girls' basketball coach last season, Sonoma County sheriff's Sgt. Carlos Basurto said.

The investigation began when the girl's parents contacted the sheriff's office after they discovered sexually explicit text messages between Medeiros and the alleged victim, Basurto said.

The two charges against Medeiros are sex with a foreign object and oral copulation with a person under 18.

Medeiros also coached for the North Bay Elite Basketball Club. The club was founded in 2000 to provide high school girls' basketball players with advanced instruction and exposure to higher-level competition, according to its website.
