Latin Culture Celebrated At Carnaval In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The grand parade for San Francisco's annual Carnaval celebration got underway Sunday morning in the city's Mission District.
The parade began around 9:30 a.m. at 24th and Bryant streets and made its way down to Mission Street and turned onto 17th Street as part of the "Spanning Borders; Bridging Cultures" themed event for the annual multi-cultural celebration.
The two-day Carnaval features Sunday's parade led by San Francisco entertainers from Beach Blanket Babylon and other contingents dancing and performing through the neighborhood.
Carnaval is a celebration of Latin American and Caribbean culture and includes a festival on Harrison Street between 16th and 23rd streets following the parade.
The streets will be lined with Latin and Caribbean cuisine options along with arts and crafts booths and performances ranging from salsa to drumming and much more.
The festival, a family-friendly event, which kicked off Saturday
and ends Sunday evening, features an inflatable bounce house, face painting and music stations for children.
The San Francisco Cultural Arts Traditions, a nonprofit organization, has sponsored the annual celebration for 34 years.
