Sunnyvale Considers New Regulations On Food Trucks

SAN FRANCISO (KCBS)— Food trucks are mushrooming in popularity, bringing mobile gourmet fare to Bay Area foodies, but Sunnyvale is the latest city looking to adopt some regulations that govern the vendors.

The city which has seen a big jump in food trucks hopes to approve what they call more appropriate regulations by the end of the year.

City spokesman John Pilgrem said the regulations go back to a time where the food trucks really meant ice cream trucks.

"We required that ice cream trucks couldn't stay stopped for more than 10 minutes and then they had to move several hundred feet. That obviously doesn't work with a high-end food truck," Pilgrem said.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

But Marie, who had her Tiki Bite food truck parked at a Sunnyvale industrial park surrounded by high-tech companies, said the last thing they need is more regulation.

"For the trucks to have any more regulation, I think it would be outrageous because we have to go through enough with the health department to go in there and to get everything passed," she said.

The Tiki Bite owner said as long as her refrigerator and hot water are working, that's basically all the health dept. asks for.

The Sunnyvale City Council was expected to take up the issue in the fall.
