Notorious San Jose Intersection Sees Improvement

SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Officials in San Jose on Tuesday celebrated the completion of improvements to a congested stretch of Almaden Expressway near Highway 85.

Shoppers trying to get to big box stores on Almaden Expressway such as Costco, Walmart, or Best Buy should find the trek much easier.

"All of the 85-bound traffic was focused on the third lane previous to the project. We've now dedicated a new fourth lane also at 85. So you have one lane for 85 north, one lane for 85 south. We took all that traffic and divided it into two," said Dan Collen, deputy director of Santa Clara County's Roads and Airports Department.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

Santa Clara County Supervisor Mike Wasserman said crews have also installed smart crosswalk lights.

"There's a standard time for walking," he explained. But in instances where someone might find it difficult to walk or they're slower, "The light automatically slows down the time so no one gets caught in the crosswalk," he said.

Improvements have also been made at the intersection of Almaden Expressway and Blossom Hill Road.
