3-Year Old Son Of SJPD Officer Shot, Killed In Gilroy Home

GILROY (CBS SF) -- Preston Orlando, the 3-year-old son of a San Jose police officer, has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as the victim of what appears to be an accidental fatal shooting at the family's Gilroy home on Thursday evening.

Preston, the son of San Jose police Officer Brandon Orlando, was shot at the home in the 7500 block of Kentwood Court just before 5 p.m. Thursday, according to Gilroy police.

He was pronounced dead en route to the hospital, police said.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

Fellow family members, including other young children, were home at the time of the shooting, police Sgt. Chad Gallicinao said.

However, Gallicinao said investigators were not yet releasing whether the shooting was self-inflicted.

The investigation will involve looking at how firearms were stored at the residence, police said.

Brandon Orlando is a nine-year veteran of the San Jose Police Department, said Sgt. Jason Dwyer, a San Jose police spokesman.

The department will "give him as much time off as he needs," Dwyer said. "His family's going to go through some pretty hard times."
