Possible Gunman Sought In San Leandro Neighborhood Following Crash

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - Dozens of police officers with guns drawn were roaming a San Leandro neighborhood Thursday morning in the search for a possible gunman.

Around 7:30 a.m., San Leandro Police were conducting a search in the neighborhood around Elsie Ave.and E. 14th St. Officers were looking for a suspect reportedly running through backyards armed with a handgun.

The man is described as white or Hispanic in his early 20s, wearing jeans and a blue sweatshirt. Earlier, the man was seen going about 100 mikes an hour in a Jeep Cherokee on East 14th Ave.

Police said they didn't chase the Jeep but it ended up in a front yard in 477 Elsie Ave.  Investigators were treating it as a stolen vehicle.

Police Lt. Randall Brandt said the man was wearing a blue sweatshirt and jeans and
fled the car with a backpack.

Witnesses told police the suspect motioned as if he was packing a gun but they didn't actually see a gun.

Officers have set up a perimeter on Elsie St., in the area of Warren, Sybil, Bancroft and E. 14th St.
