Vacaville Officer Shoots, Kills Knife-Wielding Man In Police Parking Lot

VACAVILLE (CBS SF) -- A police officer fatally shot knife-wielding man in the parking lot of the Vacaville Police Department Thursday afternoon, Vacaville city spokesman Mark Mazzaferro said.

Around 3:30 p.m. a man in his 50s entered the lobby of the Vacaville Police Department, located at 660 Merchant St., displaying bizarre and irrational behavior, requesting to meet with officers, police said.

After a few moments, the man walked out of the lobby and a request was made for an officer to check on the man's well-being.

Approximately 20 minutes later, an officer responded to the front parking lot of the Vacaville Police Department, according to police.

The man confronted the officer and displayed a knife. The man advanced toward the officer and verbally threatened him, police said.

The officer, who feared for his life, discharged his duty weapon at the knife-wielding man, striking him, police said.

Additional officers responded to the scene and began performing life-saving efforts on the man. The man was transported by ambulance to Kaiser Hospital in Vacaville where he later died.

The Solano County Coroner's Office was in the process of identifying the man and notifying his family members.

The Solano County District Attorney's Office, along with the Vacaville Police Department's Investigative Services Section, were continuing to investigate this incident.
