Big Rig Carrying Crane Hits I-80 Over Crossing In San Pablo
SAN PABLO (CBS SF) -- All lanes have reopened Wednesday afternoon on westbound Interstate 80; eight hours after a big-rig carrying a crane nicked a pedestrian overcrossing in San Pablo, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The big-rig hit the crossing and a traffic light near the San Pablo Dam Road on-ramp. The accident was reported at 8:37 a.m., according to CHP Officer Sam Morgan.
A Sig-alert that had been issued at 9:26 a.m. was canceled at 4:44 p.m., when two lanes that had been closed throughout the day reopened, according to the CHP.
Chunks of concrete had fallen from the overcrossing onto the road and the disabled big-rig was also blocking lanes for several hours, Morgan said.
No one was injured in the crash, but the crossing sustained damage as did the truck and crane, Morgan said.
The lanes remained blocked this afternoon as Caltrans officials inspected the overcrossing.
Morgan said the big-rig operator apparently "underestimated the height" of his vehicle when driving under the "clearly marked" overcrossing.
