Phil Matier: Independent Voters No Strangers To Bay Area

(KCBS) - You wouldn't necessarily know it considering all of the politically charged rhetoric in the Bay Area during the recent Republican and Democratic party conventions, but it turns out there's a sizable number of voters who consider themselves Independents.

Figures from California's Secretary of State suggest that Cupertino and Milpitas are California's top two "most politically independent cities," with plenty of residents declaring they have no formal party affiliation.

KCBS, CBS 5 and Chronicle Insider Phil Matier:

In fact, Cupertino is the only city in the entire state where Independent voters outnumber Democrats and Republicans. Close to 40% of Cupertino's registered voters state no party affiliation. 34% of voters in Milpitas say they have no formal party preference.
