Eviction Suspended For Historic SF Gun Club At Lake Merced

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- San Francisco's only outdoor shooting range no longer faces imminent eviction, now that the deadline to vacate the shores of Lake Merced has been suspended "indefinitely."

The 400-member Pacific Rod and Gun Club has held a lease with the city for 78 years.

It was originally scheduled to be evicted on Aug. 15, after it failed to reach an agreement with the city over a modern lease deal.

But the club recently met the Public Utilities Commission's demands for increased liability insurance. And now, the San Francisco Chronicle reports the gun club's deadline to vacate has been suspended while both sides negotiate over who will pay for costly lead contamination caused by the use of lead bullets until 1994.

Gun club spokesman Fred Tautenhahn says in the meantime, the
club is open for business.
