High-Security Nuclear Materials Removed From Lawrence Livermore Lab

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) -- The removal of nuclear material items that required the highest level of security at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's plutonium facility was completed Friday, according to the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Since 2006, the National Nuclear Security Administration, or NNSA, a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, had begun to develop a plan to consolidate high-security special nuclear materials.

The NNSA issued an environmental analysis in 2008 that allowed for the removal of Category I/II special nuclear material items by the end of the 2012 fiscal year.

The removal and consolidation of the materials was completed on schedule, according to the NNSA.
