'Evil Elmo' Spotted On San Francisco Streets

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – There's a new Elmo in town, at least a man dressed like him. The colorful character dubbed "Evil Elmo" has taken his act to San Francisco after being arrested in New York City.

According to the New York Times, the man, whose real name is Adam Sandler (no relation to the actor), was arrested last month in New York City for harassing tourists. He was seen in front of a Toys R Us store in Times Square saying anti-Semitic statements.

Witnesses said Sandler has made his way to San Francisco. He has been spotted in Fisherman's Wharf and a park in the Inner Richmond.

Sandler, who spoke to CBS 5 in costume, admits he was deported from Cambodia in 1999 for running a pornography website called "Welcome to the Rape Camp."

"I did a website 12 years ago in Cambodia, over 18 (year old) chicks, so it's not even a crime," he said.

Sandler makes his money on small donations from tourists, keeping the tips in a small pouch draped around his neck. He failed to see the irony in his new career path as a not so warm and fuzzy Elmo.

"I don't have another side. I just get into ventures," he said.

Sandler said he came to San Francisco because people are friendlier and there is less competition for street performers.

Police have been notified that Sandler is in the area. Authorities said they can only take action against Sandler if he is harassing or threatening someone.
