'Rally Rabbi' Helping Giants Through Playoffs?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - A lot of unusual plays have worked in the Giants favor these days that could be chalked up to divine intervention. Monday saw yet another one that could be credited to the so-called "Rally Rabbi."

His legend begins in 2006, during the Giants second Jewish Heritage Night as Rabbi Yosef Langer blew his shofar, a traditional Jewish horn. The Giants were behind, so Langer blew into the ram's horn to issue a rallying cry.

"I blew the shofar to the charge sound and people were yelling charge, and the Giants scored a couple of runs and went ahead in the ballgame," Langer said. Ever since, he's been known as the Rally Rabbi.

KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:

Langer was at Game 7 of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

"Right after I blew the shofar, Hunter Pence got that amazing, divine hit where the ball hit the bat three times," he said. "I didn't really know about that, until a couple days later. But I just know that the Giants scored five times and the Rally Rabbi was showing his juice."

There has been no shortage of "Can you believe?" moments lately that Langer said could easily be seen as God smiling down on baseball.

Consider the bunt that stayed fair in Thursday's Game 2 of the World Series, or Angel Pagan's ground ball that ricocheted off third base into left field during Game 1 on Wednesday. Not to mention the Hunter Pence ball that hit the bat three times before shooting past the St. Louis shortstop on Monday, which helped spark a five-run rally.

Grace or luck, the Rally Rabbi said he's ready should he be needed on Halloween for a potential Game 6 at AT&T Park.
