Fire Crews Douse 2-Alarm Garage Fire In Newark

NEWARK (CBS SF) -- A two-alarm fire in the garage of a single-family home in Newark displaced a family and caused more than $175,000 in damage, according to Alameda County fire officials.

The fire on the 35000 block of Severn Drive was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m., Division Chief Andy Smith said.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found the garage and attic of the single-family home fully involved in flames, Smith said.

The fire was brought under control in less than 25 minutes, but it destroyed the garage and roof and caused heavy smoke and water damage inside the home. Smith estimated damage at around $175,000 to $200,000.

The occupants of the home were already outside when firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.

The occupants were displaced, and are working with their insurance company to find temporary lodging, Smith said.
