4 Injured As SUV Blasts Through Livermore Restaurant

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) - An SUV plowed into an Italian restaurant in Livermore Monday afternoon, injuring four people, a police sergeant said.

Police received a report at 12:45 p.m. of a vehicle driving through the Strings Italian Cafe at the corner of North Livermore Avenue and Las Positas Road, Livermore police Sgt. John Hurd said.

The Cadillac Escalade was parked in front of the restaurant when the driver thought the vehicle was set in reverse and hit the accelerator, Hurd said. However, the car was actually in drive and went forward, smashing into the building.

It traveled through the dining room and out the other side of the building, Hurd said.

Four people were injured, with the most severe injury being a broken leg, he said. The driver was unhurt. Hurd said there were 16 or 17 people at the restaurant at the time of the crash.

The restaurant's glass was shattered, but there was no major structural damage, he said.
