Santa Clara County Announces Major Gun Buyback Program

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Santa Clara County has unveiled plans for what officials hope will be the largest gun buyback event held so far in the Bay Area.

The gun buyback program will be held on Saturday, March 2 at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

"We will be offering $100 for handguns, shotguns and rifles and we will pay $200 for assault weapons," said Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President Ken Yeager. "The anonymous buyback program will allow anyone to turn in a firearm with no questions asked, getting unwanted and potentially dangerous weapons out of our homes."

All told, $150,000 will be up for grabs.

District Attorney Jeff Rosen said the reality is there is loss of life on the level of Sandy Hook every year in Santa Clara County.

"36 were killed by guns last year, 37 the year before," he said. "But unlike Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech or Aurora, the victims in our county were not gathered in their classrooms, on campus or watching a movie."

Officials note that those looking to bring their guns in don't have to be a resident of Santa Clara County to participate.
