Missing Santa Cruz County Man Located In Salt Lake City

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) - A Scotts Valley man reported missing after he suffered a head injury earlier this week has been found by police in Salt Lake City and apparently was heading toward the East Coast, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

Matthew Abraham, 20, who suffered a head injury in a bicycle accident a week ago and may have remained disoriented from it, was last seen at his residence in Scotts Valley on Wednesday evening, sheriff's deputies said.

His disappearance prompted a search effort by the Santa Cruz County Search and Rescue Team in the Scotts Valley area on Thursday and Friday morning.

However, it wasn't until a bus driver reported seeing Abraham leave a Megabus in Sparks, Nev. that authorities expanded their search to eastern states.

The driver told authorities Friday that she saw him get off the bus at the Petro Sparks Truck Stop around 1 p.m. Thursday. Sparks police obtained surveillance footage from the area and sheriff's deputies showed it to family members, who confirmed it was Abraham.

The search in Santa Cruz County was then suspended Friday afternoon and agencies from Nevada and Utah were drawn into the search.

A friend that Abraham had met while traveling then contacted authorities and Abraham's family and said that he was in Salt Lake City. The friend told investigators that Abraham had asked for help getting to the East Coast.

Abraham was discovered by local police around 5 p.m. in a Salt Lake City library and taken into custody. He was medically evaluated and seems to be in good health despite his head injury.

His parents are on their way to Utah to meet him.
