Castro Valley Man Drowns Off Hawaiian Island

LIHUE, Hawaii (CBS / AP) -- Officials have identified the California man who drowned in waters off Kauai as Cristian Lung of Castro Valley.

Kauai County said in a statement Friday Lung was 41 years old.

Firefighters responded Thursday to a call about a swimmer in distress in waters near the Plantation Hale Hotel in Kapaa.

Bystanders were attempting to help the man when firefighters arrived. Firefighters helped bring his unresponsive body to shore and began performing CPR.

Medics transported the man to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say the man is the 11th person to drown in Kauai waters this year.

The National Weather Service has posted a high surf warning for all north- and west-facing shores until at least 6 a.m. Saturday. Waves are expected to reach up to 25 feet.
