Baby Reportedly Sold For $15,000 Over Facebook In India

SAHARANPUR, India (CBS SF) - Four people in India are reportedly under arrest for their alleged roles in the sale of a newborn boy on the Internet for the equivalent nearly $15,000.

According to multiple media outlets, Amit Kumar was arrested for trying to buy the newborn from hospital staff after the child's grandfather, Feroz Khan, told his daughter the child had died and took a payout from a nurse in exchange for the healthy child.

According to the London Daily Mail, the 3-day-old boy was then sold to an intermediary, who offered the child for sale on Facebook.

The child's mother became suspicious after her father began displaying his new wealth and reported the child missing.

The Daily Mail reports that the grandfather has explained that he kidnapped the baby so that his daughter could get married again. Her husband had left earlier this year.

Examiner.com reported that the child's grandfather, the nurse and a lab technician involved in the sale were arrested, as was Kumar.
