Bill Would Give Parents Control Of Personal Information On Networking Sites
SACRAMENTO (CBS SF/AP) - The state Senate has passed a bill that would allow parents to remove their children's personal information from social networking sites.
Democratic Sen. Ellen Corbett of Hayward says SB501 gives parents the right to protect their children by removing addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers and bank or credit card account information. The bill applies to children under age 18.

The bill is opposed by Facebook and other tech companies that say it would be impossible to implement. A gay-rights advocacy group also warned that the bill could prevent young people from accessing support services if they face family rejection.
Corbett says her bill does not regulate content or infringe upon free speech rights.
Her bill passed 23-10 Thursday and moves to the Assembly.
