2 People Drown Near Los Gatos When Canoe Capsizes In Reservoir

LOS GATOS (CBS SF) -- Two people are confirmed dead after a canoe carrying four people capsized in a reservoir near Los Gatos Sunday afternoon, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office was contacted just after 1 p.m. on a report of a capsized boat at the Lexington Reservoir, according to Deputy Kurtis Stenderup.

Two people who were in the boat, a 16-year-old girl and a 25-year-old male, were able to get back to shore, Stenderup said.

Another person, a 35-year-old male, was found in the water within about an hour after deputies arrived, and declared dead after being transported to an area hospital.

A fourth person, a 30-year-old male, was recovered from the water around 5 p.m. He was also taken to the hospital and declared dead there, Stenderup said.

No foul play is suspected but the cause of the accident remains under investigation. Stenderup said investigators will consider whether windy weather at the reservoir was a factor.

None of the people in the canoe were wearing life vests, Stenderup said.

All four people were from the same family, and are "very distraught," Stenderup said.
