Human Head Discovered At Recycling Yard In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Authorities are investigating the discovery of a human head found at an Oakland recycling yard Wednesday morning.

The human remains were found by workers at California Waste Solutions, located at 10th and Pine in West Oakland.

Police said the head could be mummified, which might make it difficult to identify. Investigators searched the area Wednesday for additional remains.

Cadaver dogs with Alameda County's Search and Rescue team were sent to the back of the facility Wednesday afternoon, sifting through stacks of garbage, said Alameda County Sheriff's Department spokesman, J.D. Nelson.

Nelson said he could not elaborate on the discovery of the head since the Oakland Police Department is the lead investigative agency.

Cadaver dogs are trained to sniff out dead human flesh. Nelson said the dogs are trying to find the rest of the remains.

Detectives told KPIX 5 late Wednesday that they are investigating the case as a murder and said the skull showed signs of foul play. They also said the victim has been dead for a long time.

Dental records and other techniques will be used to identify the skull, detectives said.
