10 Women Escape Burning Limousine In Walnut Creek

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- A group of 10 women escaped from a burning limousine in the gated Walnut Creek community of Rossmoor Sunday.

Firefighters were called to the gated community around 11:35 a.m. They quickly put out the fire inside the 2009 Lincoln Town Car owned by TownCar SF and parked on Skycrest Drive.

The blaze destroyed the vehicle which was to be used for the 90th birthday party of Elayne Lofchie.

Most of the passengers were in their mid-nineties.

"I think it's a miracle the way the whole thing evolved, really I do," Lofchie told KPIX 5. "Everyone was calm. Inside I don't know how they were because I wasn't calm inside...not at all."

Passengers and witnesses said the chauffeur took charge and made sure everyone got out.

The owner of TownCar SF said he had his drivers go through training after a bride and four of her friends were killed when their limo caught fire on the San Mateo Bridge last month.

The limo owner said Sunday's fire was caused by an electrical problem.

Despite the fire, the women did not miss the celebration and traveled in private cars to the event.
