Person Found Dead After Van Drives Into San Francisco Bay

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- One person was found dead after being trapped inside a van that drove into San Francisco Bay off the Marina Green late Friday afternoon, according to authorities.

The vehicle was reported in the water around 5 p.m., Officer Gordon Shyy of the San Francisco Police Department said.

An official with the Coast Guard told KPIX 5 that there was only one person inside the vehicle as it drove into the bay.

The Coast Guard provided a boat to create a safety zone around the area while police and firefighters responded to the park between Fort Mason and the Presidio.

Police said that the van was located partially submerged in the water and a civilian boat was trying to extract the occupant.

But while the vehicle remained visible for some time, it eventually became submerged in the water with one person trapped inside. Dive teams then searched the water for the vehicle for several hours.

Around 8 p.m. the van was located with the person found dead inside. The person has not been identified pending notification of their family.

The San Francisco Fire Department told KPIX 5 that the body remained in the submerged minivan as of late Friday night. Divers planned to tow the vehicle out of the water on Saturday.
