Coast Guard Responds To Charter Boat In Distress Near Farallon Islands

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a fishing boat with two dozen people aboard that was reportedly taking on water near the Farallon Islands Sunday afternoon.

The crew of the 50-foot charter fishing vessel called for assistance at about noon, and there were believed to be approximately 24 crew and passengers on board, Coast Guard spokesman Mike Lutz said.

The distressed boat's water pumps were reportedly keeping up with the incoming water, though the crew called for help from the Coast Guard and other fishing vessels that were in the area, Lutz said.

The Farallon Islands are located about 27 miles west of San Francisco.

The Coast Guard dispatched a 47-foot motor lifeboat, the 87-foot "Hawksbill," and the rescue helicopter "Dolphin," Lutz said.
