SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Berkeley police were investigating the shooting death of a man in South Berkeley Wednesday night.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said the shooting was reported at 6:52 p.m. in the 1800 block of Derby Street between Grant Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

“Several of the callers reported that there was a person down. Our officers responded to the scene and we did locate a male subject down on the sidewalk who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds,” she said.

A Fire Department ambulance took the man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Coats said investigators have contacted witnesses in the area, but have not yet identified any suspects.

She urged anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to call Berkeley police at (510) 981-5980 or (510) 981-5900.
