San Jose 'Gold Club' Bikini Bar May Be Unwelcome Downtown Addition

SAN JOSE (KCBS)— The latest addition to San Jose's downtown entertainment scene may also be the most controversial. The so-called "gentleman's club," is opening soon in a very prominent location.

The Gold Club is moving into San Jose's historic Building and Loan Association Building. According to flashy signs on the windows it is a "world famous gentleman's club".

However, its arrival is not going over well with some downtowners.

"I think it shouldn't open," said Melinda, who works across the street. "San Jose has enough crime. It may lure the wrong people."

City Councilman Sam Liccardo was equally unenthusiastic about the Gold Club.

"We do not view strip clubs or bikini bars as a pathway to economic development in this city," Liccardo said.

He notes that strip clubs are illegal in San Jose. No one from the business responded to our request for comment, although officials with the Downtown Association said the Gold Club is a "bikini bar."

Liccardo notes that besides the Gold Club, nine new businesses have recently opened in the downtown area.
