Larry Magid: Mircosoft's CEO's Retirement Is A Wise Move

REDMOND, WA (KCBS)—Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who took over the helm of the world's largest software company from founder Bill Gates 13 years ago, will retire within the next 12 months.

Microsoft Corp. did not name a successor but said the company is forming a search committee and that Ballmer will stay on until a replacement is found.

Tech Report: Mircosoft's CEO Retires

Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't do well under Ballmer's leadership. Windows 8, though not a total dud, was still a disappointment. Their hardware, the Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets didn't do well and even their Windows Phone, which critically was a success, was a commercial failure as well.

Overall I think it's probably wise for him to step down; the company needs new leadership. Now, we will just have to see what happens going forward.
