Cal's Franklin Earns 5 Golden Goggle Nominations

BERKELEY (CBS/AP) -- Olympic and world champion Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky and Ryan Lochte are the leading nominees for USA Swimming's Golden Goggle awards.

Franklin, a freshman at Cal, is up for five awards; Ledecky and Lochte received four nods each. The 10th annual awards will be given out Nov. 24 in Los Angeles.

Franklin, Ledecky and open water swimmer Haley Anderson were nominated for female athlete of the year. They combined to win 11 gold medals at this summer's world championships in Spain.

Lochte and world champion Matt Grevers are the lone nominees for male athlete of the year.

Ledecky will be competing against herself in the female race of the year category. She was nominated for her performances in the 800 and 1,500-meter freestyles at the world meet, while Franklin and Anderson were also nominated.

Lochte has two chances to win the male race of the year. He was nominated for his results in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley at worlds; Grevers got the category's other nod for his 100 back win in Spain.

Fan voting, which counts for a percentage of the final vote totals, is underway online.
