PG&E Prepares Aerial High-Wire Upgrades In Contra Costa County

ANTIOCH (KCBS)— Pacific Gas and Electric is preparing for high-wire aerial work on nearly 30-miles of transmission line in Contra Costa. The utility company said the upgrade is necessary to meet growing demands for electricity.

More than 130 transmission towers line the electrical power route from a sub station in Antioch to another in Moraga. Over 50 towers are scheduled to undergo modification by late spring next year according to PG&E spokesman Paul Moreno.

Moreno said the work will also help ease electrical demand during peak summer loads.

"We're seeing increased population growth over the years and we're anticipating additional growth and with that comes electric demand growth, so we need to stay ahead of that."

He said by the time this $45 million project is underway, utility customers in the area will be seeing helicopters flying around the transmission lines.

"We'll be using helicopters to do much of the work so we won't have ground impacts. We're just raising the height of the tower and replacing the existing power lines with heavier powerlines

PG&E said customers should not be worried about service disruptions for the work that should be finished by December, 2015.
