72-Year-Old Woman Killed In Parking Lot Of North Bay Health Club

WINDSOR (CBS SF) - The Sonoma County coroner's office has identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle at the Airport Health Club Thursday morning as 72-year-old Suzan Kay Smith of Santa Rosa.

Smith was walking in the parking lot toward the entrance of the gym at 432 Aviation Blvd. south of Windsor in unincorporated Sonoma County when she was run over by a Toyota Tundra driven by Richard Lando, 40, of Windsor, around 7:05 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jon Sloat said.

Lando, who just arrived at the club, was backing up northbound and did not see Smith before the rear of the truck struck her, Sloat said.

Smith fell to the ground and was struck by the rear wheels, Sloat said. Lando was not aware of what happened and pulled forward, but when he realized he struck Smith he went for help inside the health club.

"It's believed he ran over the woman a second time," Sloat said.

Medics from the Rincon Valley Fire Department arrived within minutes and pronounced the Smith dead at the scene, Sloat said.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the fatal collision, Sloat said.

The CHP is reviewing video taken by a camera at the health club, Sloat said.
