SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Loyal San Francisco 49er fans are not wasting any time responding to recent Seattle Seahawks propaganda pranks being carried out in the Bay Area. They plan to up the ante with an even higher-profile stunt.
As of Wednesday morning, nearly 300 Niner fans had pledged to fund a billboard touting San Francisco’s championship legacy outside CenturyLink Field, the home of the Seahawks – a franchise which has never won the Super Bowl. The group had already surpassed their funding goal, $7,000 on the website gofundme, and planned to give the extra money money to a charity.READ MORE: UPDATE: 1 Dead, 5 Wounded in Saturday Evening Shooting at Oakland's Lake Merritt
“This group has been created to raise funds to place a billboard within half a mile of Century Link Field…We are looking to raise about 7-8k to keep our ad there for at least 1 month, all during December and some of January for their playoff games.,” wrote campaign organizer Aasheesh Shravah.
The proposed billboard message (pictured) displays the words “How Many Do You Have?” above a picture of the 49ers’ five Lombardi Super Bowl Championship trophies superimposed over and image of Dwight Clark’s legendary “The Catch” play at Candlestick Park. A Facebook fan page in support of the prank has nearly 900 followers.READ MORE: UPDATE: PG&E Restores Power To More Than 50,000 East Bay Customers
The campaign comes on the heels of a similar crowd funding stunt from Seattle fans that successfully raised enough money ($2,855) to fly a “Go Hawks” banner over Candlestick Sunday just minutes before the two teams faced off in a game the 49ers won 19-17. Seahawks fans have also pooled money to purchase a personalized brick outside the new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the future home of the 49ers. The message on that brick is not yet known.
