SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—In just over a year, the most state of the art Children’s Hospital on the west coast will open in San Francisco, according the UCSF officials. The UCSF facility will replace an old, cramped out-dated space in Parnassus Heights.

Now, off Third Street in Mission Bay, rises the new USCF Benioff Children’s Hospital near the adjacent women’s and cancer hospitals.

It’s over 800,000 square feet and is a high-tech, brightly-lit, family- friendly facility that will serve children from all over Northern California.

“It’s going to be the best new children’s hospital in America,” Kimberly Scurr, executive director of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital said.

Scurr pointed proudly to the new helipad as proof.

“It’s the very first helipad approved in the City of San Francisco for transport of critically-ill children,” she said.

“Not only do we get these children that are very critically ill but we also have families who are displaced. So part of the building of this hospital is really keeping those families in mind.”

There is dedicated children’s operating room, a 58-bed intensive car center, and specialty-treatment facilities for a whole spectrum of illnesses.

“A big part of the work we do is to help children cope with having an illness; we have a very large program that helps normalize what is typically a very abnormal experience,” Scurr said.
