Special Events Planned At Candlestick Park Before Demolition

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The 49ers and the city of San Francisco are planning a grand send-off for Candlestick Park as the stadium is set to host its last NFL game Monday night, the 49ers final regular season home game against the Atlanta Falcons.

"We're going to try to give her a good send-off. I don't want to spoil any of that for the fans that might be listening," said 49ers Vice President of Stadium Operations and Security Jim Mercurio. "We're planning to do some pretty special things, some great tributes."

And the send-offs won't end on Monday night. Phil Ginsburg, General Manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, said several events are scheduled between now and when Candlestick closes to the public in the fall of 2014.

"One will be a community event, we're planning for this coming summer, where people will have the opportunity to come and visit the stadium, get on the field, take some tours of the stadium, a big fanfest," Ginsburg said.

There are also 5K and 10K's planned, other sporting events and concerts. Efforts to book Paul McCartney are still in the works; after all, the Beatles played their last concert at Candlestick in 1966.

"Keep your fingers crossed," said Ginsburg.

There is still a remote chance the 49ers could host a playoff game, but it would involve either:  a.) the division-leading Seattle Seahawks losing their last two regular season games and the 49ers winning their last two or b.)  the presumed 5th seed (49ers) and 6th seed playoff teams both winning two playoff games on the road.

Candlestick Park is scheduled to be demolished in late 2014 or early 2015.
