8 Rescued After Jumping Off Burning Boat Near Tiburon

TIBURON (CBS SF) -- Five adults and three children were rescued after jumping from a burning boat near Tiburon Saturday afternoon, a U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said.

The Coast Guard got a call around 12:40 p.m. from occupants of a 28-foot Formula boat reporting that smoke was coming from somewhere on board, according to Lt. Corinne Gaines.

The eight people on board were advised to put on life jackets and get into the water to escape the fire.

About five minutes later, a nearby pleasure craft arrived on the scene and occupants aboard were able to pull all eight people from the water, the spokeswoman said.

They were taken to Loch Lomond Marina in San Rafael.

No injuries were reported.

Gaines said the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that boats are equipped with the proper safety equipment, including life jackets.
