Police Praise Idaho Man's Heroism For Help With Oakland Accident Victims
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Oakland police Friday praised the heroic actions of a Boise, Idaho man who jumped off an airport shuttle bus to render aid to two accident victims.
Wayne Rancourt, an executive with wood products firm Boise Cascade, had just flown into Oakland International Airport and was riding the shuttle to BART when he saw a vehicle near Hegenberger Road at the San Leandro Street off-ramp hit the median and overturn, according to police.
Rancourt asked the bus driver to let him out so he could help, and then took off his suit jacket, dress shirt and tie to help provide first aid to the vehicle's occupants, police said.
The driver, a 95-year-old man, was bleeding from a cut to the head while the passenger, a 75-year-old, appeared to be uninjured.
Rancourt remained on the scene until paramedics arrived.
Police said that when Sgt. Allan Steinberger called Rancourt later to let him know the vehicle's occupants were OK, he was buying another dress shirt at a Men's Warehouse store in preparation for his business meeting.
