Stanford Linebacker Trent Murphy Selected By Washington Redskins In 2014 NFL Draft

ASHBURN, Va. (CBS/AP) — Stanford linebacker Trent Murphy was selected by the Washington Redskins in the 2014 NFL draft second round Friday, the first Bay Area player picked in the draft.

Murphy was taken at No. 47 overall.

Murphy opted to return to Stanford as a fifth-year senior in 2013 instead of entering the 2013 NFL Draft. He ended the season ranked first in the Pac-12 in sacks and was named All Pac-12 first team for the second year among numerous other honors and awards.

The Redskins were slated to have the 34th overall pick, but they traded it to the Dallas Cowboys for Nos. 47 and 78.

The Redskins didn't have a first round selection, having traded it to the St. Louis Rams as part of the deal that allowed them to pick franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III two years ago.
