Proposed Residential Towers At Jack London Square Spark Ire In Oakland

OAKLAND (KCBS)— A proposal to build two residential towers on the Oakland waterfront at Jack London Square is drawing the ire of some Oakland residents.

The citizen's group "Waterfront Action" tells the Oakland Tribune that people living in Oakland do not want what it calls a "Wall on the Waterfront."

The plan calls for a 17-story tower at the mouth of Broadway and a 26-story tower near Harrison and Alice Streets.

The 26-story tower would be more than twice as tall as the current 125-foot height limit for the area.

Some city leaders who support the proposal are telling residents that the proposal would not lead to the waterfront being privatized.
