Pleasant Hill Neighbors Say Proposed 4-Story Hilton Is Just Too Tall

PLEASANT HILL (CBS) -- Hilton wants to build a new, 4-story hotel in Pleasant Hill.

Neighbors hate the idea.

On a quiet stretch of Ellinwood Way in Pleasant Hill, the staple guns are in overdrive.

There are flags and poles in the air, but this isn't a celebration, it's protest over a proposed new Hilton Homewood Suites, off Highway 680.

Neighbors say the four stories represented by the poles are too tall.

Justine Mattias is opposed to the hotel.

"It's way too tall and it's also going to decrease the value of our housing here."

Chris Handy doesn't like it either

"Mostly because it's too big," said Handy. "If you look at all of the other places here, they're two stories."

They're not wrong. The city of Pleasant Hill would have to re-zone to allow the proposed Hilton. It would sit on the site of a Chevy's that's been vacant for four years.

"I think they should put a restaurant in," said Eric Johnson. "The Chevy's was already very busy."

Neighbors feel there's already enough hotels in the area, including a Residence Inn right next to the proposed site. It's only two stories tall.

The city will hold a meeting about the proposed Hilton next week. Neighbors vow they'll be there -- ready to fight.
