Fans Give Rave Reviews To New 49ers Stadium In Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- The new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara got lots of thumbs up from fans attending Saturday night's San Jose Earthquakes game.

More than 40,000 people were in attendance. That amounts to about 80,000 happy thumbs.

The first things fans like when they arrive is how immense the $1.3 billion structure is. They appreciate the clean lines.

Then there's the jaw-dropping 3rd floor Great Room. The sheer size of it is shocking.

"It's like the inside of an airport," remarked one woman.

High ceilings, several bars, flat screen TVs everywhere -- the amenities will make you forget Candlestick Park.

As for the food, the new 49ers stadium offers more vegetarian items than any other NFL venue in the country.

Other menu items include wood-fired pizza, Angus burgers, and oyster pan roast. You won't find a 'hot dog' anywhere -- but there are plenty of 'frankfurters.' Desserts include lemon bars and red velvet cupcakes.

Stadium owners are taking note of everything – and so far, so good. They said Saturday night's practice run gives them a good idea of what to expect next weekend, when the 49ers play their exhibition game.

There were a couple of complaints. Some griped about the occasional plane flying overhead. Others experienced parking problems.

49ers officials say they will be listening closely to what went right and what went wrong Saturday tonight so fixes can be made for the next events: two preseason games on August 17 and 24, ahead of the regular season home opener on September 14.
