49ers Star Ray McDonald Arrested, Charged With Felony Domestic Violence

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- San Jose police have released Ray McDonald from jail after the 49ers defensive end posted bail Sunday following his arrest earlier in the day for alleged domestic violence.

According to police Sgt. Heather Randol, officers responded to reports of violence in the 2500 block of Bentley Ridge Driver around 2:45 a.m.

McDonald, 29, was subsequently taken into custody without incident and booked into Santa Clara County Jail on felony domestic violence charges.

He has been playing for San Francisco since he was drafted as a third round pick in 2007.

His case is now headed to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office for review, Randol said.

Responding to incident, San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke issued the following statement Sunday:

"The 49ers organization is aware of the recent reports regarding Ray McDonald and we take such matters seriously. As we continue to gather the facts, we will reserve further comment."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties last week for players accused of domestic violence.

The incident is the latest blow to what has been one of the NFL's fiercest defenses. On Friday, linebacker Aldon Smith received a nine-game suspension for what the league called violations of its substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies.
